Book Review: Insurgent by Veronica Roth

Hello friends! I have another review of a great book for you! Insurgent, the sequel to Divergent which I reviewed here.

Beware, there might be some spoilers here, so if you haven’t read the book come back later!

Finch here, showing off my copy of Insurgent.
He only does this because he gets paid in treats!

Tris, Four, and Caleb (among others) go to Amity, where most of the surviving members of Abnegation are. Tris finds out, by listening in to a private conversation between Johanna (an Amity speaker, not a leader because they don’t have leaders) and Marcus that the Abnegation Leaders died protecting a secret. Tris wants to find out the secret her parents died protecting, so she confronts Marcus about it, but he will not tell her what the secret is.

Then they are attacked by Dauntless and Erudite traitors, but they manage to escape, and jump on a moving train to get away, but the train is full of Factionless. The Factionless are the people who, for whatever reason, leave their factions and live in the city’s abandoned houses. Nobody ever worried or cared for them (except for Abnegation). It is a big surprise to Tris and Four to find there is a whole functioning society, where people seem happy, and yet there are no factions.

I love Tris’ transformation and growth as a character. She starts out depressed and feels unworthy after seeing so many people die because of her, or for her. She is in a very dark place, and the way she comes out of it is very inspiring. She doesn’t become your typical YA female protagonist, at least not in my opinion. She is strong and she stands up for herself. She doesn’t depend on Tobias, and that is what I love the most about her character.

My favorite part was towards the end, when Tris stands up for herself and what she believes in. When she tells Tobias he’s the one who has been lying to her, because she can’t believe his love is so feeble. My heart was pounding, hoping that she got her message through to Tobias. But every second after that seemed like an eternity. Until, this:

“You were right,: Tobias says quietly… “I do know who you are. I just needed to be reminded.”

And then everything Tris had been working for, even what her parents died for all came true. Because of Tobias’ love for Tris. What an intense ending!! I am really looking forward to the next book!! Definitely read this series, I highly recommend it. It’s a fun read.
